As we end the first quarter of 2023, airlines continue to find ways to improve their service delivery and comfort for passengers. This is no mean feat as global labour shortages, ongoing supply chain disruptions, and geo-economics concerns continue to plague many regions. However, there is a growing demand for cabin refurbishments in the MRO industry, and innovative technologies are introducing earth-friendly alternatives to help airlines reduce their carbon footprint.

In Inflight Magazine’s March/April edition, Elena Lodge investigates cabin interiors and seeks insight into cabin interiors from MRO service providers such as AJW Technique Interiors. As the aviation stakeholders smile at the post-pandemic recovery in the industry, retrofitting is the current trend says Lodge, who names some airlines and the type of interior changes they are making to their fleets. She speaks to Sohaib Ahmed, Programme Manager – Interiors, AJW, who says airlines have focused on essential fleet maintenance and have neglected interior refurbishments as a non-essential expense over the past few years. “Amidst the recent and welcome upturn in travel bookings, [airlines] are now looking to cabin MRO maintenance services for a fresh interior look,” continues Ahmed who is optimistic about the interiors industry going forward.

Lodge comments on the growth of flights in regions such as China and how this will increase the demand for MRO facilities. Michael Leung, Managing Director of AAR Engineering Services Asia, speaks about how passengers are driving the demand for interior refitting and how aircraft which have been grounded for two or three years are being put into service again, but their tired interiors are needing attention. This is good news for MRO facilities.

There seems to be a consensus from those in the interior industry, that airlines should prioritise the quality of service and reliability above all. Ahmed of AJW concurs saying, “An MRO should adhere to all relevant safety and environmental regulations and maintain frequent communication and transparency from beginning to end.”

The article moves on to discuss sustainability and what the aviation industry is doing to meet its 2050 net zero carbon pledge. Companies such as AJW have introduced a sustainable aircraft seating solution in the form of SkyLeather®. This eco-friendly alternative to traditional and synthetic leather is made from water-based polyurethane as opposed to petrochemicals and is leading the way in sustainability. Another technology emerging in the field of sustainability is additive manufacturing (AM), more commonly known as 3D printing. Exciting times in the interior industry.

Lodge draws attention to challenges still facing the industry and the headwinds facing MRO facilities. Some have been around for some years; others have only recently emerged but are having a vast impact on the industry. “There is pressure to keep fleets in service and to minimise downtime and finding quick and efficient maintenance and repair services amidst a crippled workforce across the sector, is affecting turnaround time,” says Ahmed realistically.

Concluding the insight into cabin interiors MRO, Lodge says there is still cause for celebration despite the complications for MRO services and that we must take time to appreciate victories and successes along the way. She notes AJW’s milestone 90th anniversary last year as one of those victories, with Ahmed adding more “pivotal moments of growth”, the launch of AJW Technique MRO facility in Montreal in 2012, and the first power-by-the-hour contract signed by AJW in the 1990s. The article closes with words of optimism from the AJW Programme Manager for Interiors who attributes AJW Group’s success to its people,

“Behind all these big moments, are our people. Through the resilience, determination, and commitment of our people, we are who we are. The most valuable lesson learned – your most important resource, is your human resource.”
