The resurgence of travel bookings has driven operators to consider interior refurbishments and modifications to remain competitive. Amid this, innovative approaches and industry trends are reshaping the passenger experience and operational efficiency in aviation. Discover how MRO suppliers are driving transformation within aircraft cabins.
In the latest issue of LARA Magazine, journalist Lucy Powell chats to AJW Technique Interiors Programme Manager, Sohaib Ahmed about emerging trends in the cabin MRO market and finds out how companies are reacting to airline operators’ upgrade and refurbishment demands.
Powell discusses the growth in the cabin modification market due to high passenger demand and airlines moving to extend the life of their aircraft and to right-size their fleets with newer generation aircraft. The consensus among industry stakeholders is that the demand does not appear to be slowing down.
AJW Technique Interiors’ Ahmed has noticed a growing emphasis on improving passenger experience as a reason for cabin refurbishment. The Group services include galley refurbishments, seat cover changes and replacements, lavatory replacements, and cabin customisations he notes, and even within the constraints of low-fare carrier and regional operators, carriers are investing in seat comfort enhancements, including ergonomic designs and improved cushioning, “they are also showing interest in material changes that offer both aesthetic and appeal and durability” he explains.
Industry experts are saying airlines are looking anticipating their operating needs as they steer towards flights that are not only safer but more sustainable. Ahmed suggests that operators offering short-haul flights are actively pursuing galley solutions that optimise space and streamline workflow efficiency as time is of the essence.
“Lightweight yet durable materials are becoming a hallmark of galley refurbishments as there is a drive to minimise aircraft weight to enhance fuel efficiency and cost-effectiveness.”
Others in the industry are looking to areas such as overhead bin space, reconfiguring seat layout for increased passenger holding, single-aisle space innovations, and wheelchair accessibility when considering modifications for improved passenger experience and economic viability.
There have been challenges in the MRO sector, says Powell, the primary one being the supply chain. Increased commodity prices and extended Turnaround Times (TATs) have had the greatest impact and companies are having to adapt their business strategies to the challenging situation. AJW Technique’ Ahmed notes,
“Communication and collaboration are two very important factors – essential for efficient and cost-effective cabin MRO operations.”
He indicates that striking a balance between design and safety is vital and says the AJW Technique Interiors teams possess intricate knowledge to ensure customisations meet safety and compliance mandates.
Powell concludes by asking questions about sustainability, a topic high on MRO providers' and operators' lists. AJW Technique Interiors champions eco-friendly solutions through its product SkyLeather®. This key product was unveiled at AIX in Hamburg in June this year and is 25% lighter than hide leather. It is a cost-effective, high-quality alternative for operators and is a popular option for enhancing overall aircraft performance. He offers details on the fuel cost savings this innovative product will bring to an A320 or Boeing 737-800 operator and had this to say,
