The events of recent years have highlighted the agility of aviation industry stakeholders, who have driven change and process improvement to survive and navigate the ongoing challenges. So, what changes have been at the forefront of driving improvements in the MRO industry’s supply chain logistics?
In a recent article for MRO Management, Mario Pierobon talks to industry experts, including AJW Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Clyde Buntrock, to discuss recent changes and improvements in MRO supply chain logistics, the level of performance, and what is needed to continue to build resilience.
Pierobon begins by asking Buntrock how AJW Group is overcoming the widespread industry challenges of prolonged logistics lead times, parts shortages, and a diminished skilled workforce.
Buntrock observes that to cope with these circumstances, there has been a trend towards greater regionality in sourcing - with AJW taking the approach of strategically investing in inventory.
“Our operational agility has led to us driving a pooling strategy for our 450,000 line items of inventory, valued at $500 million, so it is our highest priority to efficiently manage this stock to best serve our customers’ needs.”
When asked about performance, Buntrock highlights that digital solutions such as predictive maintenance technology are gaining traction, due to their potential to enhance operators’ availability and reduce airline operational costs.
“We are on a journey to digitally transform our operations, from customer facing sales systems and intricate back-end ERPs and operational tools to developing automated fulfilment solutions,” he says.
Expanding further, Buntrock reveals that AJW is looking at first pilots for robotics at their MRO, AJW Technique, and is developing an Internet of Things (IoT) tracking system for components in transit.
Current industry challenges remain a concern, affirms Buntrock. However, “the industry has a history of survival, and businesses find ways to succeed.”
Pierobon then asks the AJW Group CEO about how the company is using inventory forecasting to predict demand and meet customers’ needs.
Buntrock notes that the use of technology-driven forecasting tools can improve the ability to meet customer needs effectively and reduce inefficiencies, errors, and delays in the supply chain. He comments that “the supply chain fracture has made efficient inventory management essential,” and states that a strong inventory management strategy is key to success.
Discussing how businesses can build supply chain resilience, Buntrock contends that it’s not just about securing materials and components, it is about nurturing relationships and fostering collaborative partnerships.
